‘SOLDIER BOY’ is the lead single from the forthcoming Inspector Tapehead album So Solar. It’s a breezy but deadly piece of guitar pop in the mould of Yo La Tengo, featuring Panda Su as guest vocalist. The track will be available for online consumption on June 19th, the same date the album pre-order will go live.
Soldier Boy was composed in a manner akin to Prince’s ‘1999’ or Tenacious D’s ‘Tribute’. This is taken from the original e-mail that Chris sent his bandmates when he wrote the song on 12th May 2012:
Last night I had a dream I was holding a guitar and I started playing a song that I'd written a long time ago and had completely forgotten about. I couldn't believe it because I remember thinking, at the time I wrote it, that it had very serious potential. I awoke and realised that such a song never existed. I struggled in vain to remember how it sounded, but I had an image, a mere snapshot in my mind of one of the chord shapes that featured in my fantasy song. At three o'clock today I found a tuning in which this shape worked nicely, and this became the opening chord in the new Inspector Tapehead song - "Soldier Boy".
Agent Cooper would be proud. The song is about the disposability of idols in the internet age.
